Chocolate Frogs for Your Next Harry Potter Party -- But Hold the Honeydukes

If you're jealous about the chocolate frogs that J.K. Rowling's wizarding world offers its citizens, all is not lost: why not make some yourself? They're perfect for your next Harry Potter themed get-together.

One of the more charming things about J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series, beside its slam-bang action and realistic portrayal of young people, is its believability. It's a complete world: everything fits, down to the smallest of details. In fact, one of the details that sticks in most people's minds is one of the first magical things Harry encounters: the chocolate frog.

The whole concept is original and exciting, even if, in practice, magical chocolate frogs have a disappointing tendency to escape before you can eat them.


As Muggles, unnaturally active chocolate frogs aren't something we're likely to encounter in any case. But that doesn't mean we have to do without chocolate frogs altogether; after all, what else are you going to serve at your next Harry Potter party or movie premiere?

Ah, but how to you get them?

Well, you don’t have to depend on finding Honeyduke's to get your fill of bittersweet amphibians. They probably wouldn't take our money, you know. (What the heck is a Knut anyway?).

But we've got a handy way for you to make some chocolate frogs of your own.

All you need is a few basic ingredients, your favorite chocolate, and a set of frog molds, which you can get from several vendors online.

This particular recipe is for 12-14 bite-sized frogs, but you can scale it up to frogs of any size.



12 ounces of your favorite chocolate (a bag of chocolate chips will do)
One teaspoon grated chocolate
Frog molds
Candy eyes (your choice of color)


Melt the chocolate carefully in a saucepan, stirring constantly. Alternately, you can melt the chocolate in a microwave set on high for 2 minutes, then stir and keep microwaving for 15 seconds at a time until it's completely melted.
Once you've melted the chocolate, add the teaspoon of grated chocolate and stir until smooth.

Pour the melted chocolate into the molds, keeping out about a teaspoon at room temperature. Refrigerate the molds for two hours.

Once the chocolate in the molds is firm, remove the frogs from their molds and tack on the eyes with the extra melted chocolate. Then put the frogs back in the refrigerator so you won't be tempted to eat them before the party.

And there you have it: genuine chocolate frogs, cute as a button and good enough to eat. You'll have to do without the jumping, though, unless you can find a witch or wizard and convince them to bespell them for you. Good luck with that!
