Chocolate Spiders -- Yum!

Have we got a treat for you, and just in time for Halloween… chocolate spiders!

Looking for some yummy chocolate spider recipes? We've got 'em here. Now, please note that we're talking about spiders made of chocolate -- you know, the kind of thing the kiddies might like for Halloween. It's kind of like putting chocolate nibs in a caviar tin and calling it chocolate caviar. That's the kind of chocolate spiders we'll be talking about.

While someone has no doubt experimented with real spiders covered with chocolate, that's too extreme even for us. There's only one word for something like that, and it's "eeeewwwww!" We don't care what it tastes like, because we're never gonna know, okay?

Mmm, arachnid treats

Both the recipes we're going to feature here result in snacks that are sizable mouthfuls, especially for the kidlets; eensy-weensy spiders they ain't. Oh, and another thing: these are crunchy critters, so if that particular feature just seems too realistically extreme for you, you might want to give chocolate spiders a pass.

For those lacking that healthy dose of arachnophobia, well, these are the ideal Halloween snacks for you and yours. You can even toss them into the bags of the trick-or-treaters who come around. They won't freak out at the sight of these gruesome goodies, though their parents might.

The classic version

It's hard to get simpler than this classic version of the chocolate spider. All you need for 20 choco-spiders is 12 ounces of tasty bittersweet chocolate morsels and two cups of chow mein noodles, both easily acquired at the local grocery store. Start out by melting the chocolate, very carefully, in a double boiler.

When it's melted, stir in the chow mein noodles, take the mix off the heat, and start dropping spoonfuls of it onto wax paper. Use chocolate chips or mini-M&Ms for eyes, let them cool a bit, and viola -- tasty, crunchy chocolate arachnids.

The healthier alternative

For those who prefer a slightly healthier option, we've got a most original recipe for chocolate spiders that involves peanut butter (the crunchy kind -- you need that crunch), honey, dry milk powder, chow mein noodles, and chocolate chips. It's simple, it's quick, and it's delicious.

This time the chow mein noodles are added last, so you actually get comical little fat spiders with legs...but let's see how an expert does it, because she's actually standing in a kitchen going through all the steps.

Just a prelude...

And there you have it, folks -- your own handmade chocolate bugs. But that's just one of many Halloween choco-treats for you to enjoy. Keep an eye out, because we'll soon have articles up about some ghastly treats that make chocolate spiders look cute and cuddly!
